Vacancy Announcement

    Director of Religious Education

    Job Title: Director of Religious Education for Children & Youth
    Reports to: Minister
    Hours: 20 hrs/wk, some hours at church required three Sundays a month
    Salary: $1000/mo.

    Primary Purpose: Direct a unique church program for children and youth. Work under general supervision of the minister and in concert with the RE committee to provide support and resources for Sunday school and activities that promote and affirm Unitarian Universalist principles. For more detail see Specific Duties and Responsibilities below.

    Qualifications:

      Education:
        High School Diploma
        College Degree preferred

      Knowledge and Skills:
        Ability to work with children and youth
        Ability to work with volunteers
        Ability to maintain data
        Ability to organize supplies and materials
        Ability to communicate effectively
        Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Word, Publisher, etc.)
        Ability to create fliers, pamphlets and other publications

      Experience:
        Experience working with children and/or teen-agers
        Experience working with volunteers

      Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the DRE for Children & Youth:

        (Two asterisks ”**” indicates duties shared with the RE Committee for Children & Youth)

        Preparing for each new RE church school year (June/July/August/Sept):
          **Develop RE pamphlet for church school year– referring to previous pamphlets, write DRE letter, obtain short paragraph from teacher for each class, obtain final okay from committee before publication
          Prepare current teacher contact information: names/numbers/e-mail/who teaches which class
          Prepare current student contact information: names/numbers/e-mail/parents/birthdates
          **Create and maintain calendar of Sundays with dates marked, discussed with committee: RE Sunday, Halloween party, RE in the Park, fire drills, opening RE Sunday in the fall, teacher in-services
          **Work on ideas for training and coordinate ideas with committee
          **Plan fall teacher conference – agenda, arrange for guest speakers, etc.
          **Develop teacher packet, referring to previous packets-- make copies and assemble
          Keep current applications and background checks on all teachers, follow up especially with new teachers
          Check references on all teacher applications
          Ensure all teacher forms have been received, used properly, and disposed of properly
          Set up registration table each Sunday in August to register all children for new church school year
          **Review enrollment form for approval
          **Plan opening day for church school year, lesson plans as group circle

        Throughout the year:
          **Plan RE in the Park held in October
          **Plan Halloween party
          **Plan fire drill and invite firefighters to visit

        Record-keeping:
          Keep current statistics on attendance: highs, lows, averages, mean, by year and by month
          Maintain records and files
          Continue enrolling children as more attend class throughout the year
          Obtain congregational survey results and contact volunteers for various needs
          Prepare childcare guidelines and pamphlet
          **Review and revise as needed all RE policies and procedures, goals and objectives
          Maintain record of children/youth permission slips
          Maintain files of all RE forms

        Assisting teachers:
          Inventory RE supplies and curricula and keep up supplies whenever needed or asked.
          Arrange child care for days needed, especially for teacher in-service days
          Provide teachers with special, one-Sunday-use supplies
          Provide teachers with specific books from library when requested
          Assist teachers with arranging for guests and substitute teachers
          Assist youth group leader(s) as needed with youth classes, activities, and events

        Curricula:
          Inventory Westside UU curricula
          Explore additional curricula – give to teachers to evaluate
          Visit district library occasionally and communicate with teachers as to what is available
          Check out materials from district as requested by teachers/committee

        Communication:
          Check with district monthly for dates of all events and disperse to RE committee and teachers
          Attend annual southwest district RE conference and report to committee
          Write newsletter items about future RE events and short stories about past occurrences
          Contribute to Order of Service when needed
          Provide copies of RE brochure to usher/greeters to be included in visitor packets
          Be responsible for occasional Story for All Ages, may enlist help from children/families
          Make posters and flyers when needed for publicity
          Assist youth group with publicity for their special events
          Report all expenditures to RE chair – obtain prior permission for any expenditure over $15
          Recruit new teachers and assistants year-round
          Welcome visitors with children and introduce the visiting children to their teachers and classmates
          **Meet with RE committee and report activities monthly
          **Communicate by e-mail with RE chair(s) weekly
          Meet with minister monthly
          Keep time log
